Palmeiras, Flamengo, Atletico Mineiro loom as heavyweights in Copa Libertadores group stage

Twelve former winners are on the South American field for the South American Copa Libertadores, which begins on Tuesday. However, they are any realistic chances that they will win the tournament this time. The Uruguayan team, Penarol, and Nacional, both were extremely dominant during the initial years. However, they have not won it since the end of the 1980s. Over 30 years have gone by from the time Colo Colo of Chile took the trophy for the first time. Also, Olimpia in Paraguay’s most recent title came just twenty years back. That leaves Brazil as well as Argentina.

Since the Libertadores switched to the current format in 2017, and, it has been played over the entire year instead of being compressed into the first 6 months of the year, the dominance of the two big teams is almost complete. In the other eight nations, only one club -Barcelona of Ecuador Barcelona Ecuador is in the semifinals. Since the controversy-filled River Plate against Boca Juniors final in the year 2018, Brazil has taken control, with three consecutive wins, two of them coming in all-Brazilian finals.

Last time, Palmeiras won their title, beating Flamengo at the end of with two-time national champions Atletico Mineiro winning without a loss in the semifinals. Brazil’s biggest three are the most obvious location to search for this year’s top teams.

Palmeiras, which is currently under the guidance of Portuguese manager Abel Ferreira, look especially solid. Flamengo has the services of a new Portuguese coach, the former midfielder for international teams Paulo Sousa, who may be contemplating whether the decision was the wrong decision by leaving the Poland national team to lead Brazil’s Rio giants. It has not been going off to a great start. The three-center-back formation seems to be unchangeable impermanence. However, Flamengo’s team does not appear to be particularly taxing, which could give Sousa some much-needed time.

Atletico Mineiro also has a foreign coach, Argentina’s Antonio Mohamed. He’s been less disciplined than Sousa and has adapted his style to the players and not the other way around. However, his team has been drawn into one of the most difficult teams, with spice added by two local derbies against America Mineiro, playing their first Libertadores campaign. He is also eager to splash water in the bubbly of their famous city competitors.

In the case of other Brazilian teams, a lot is expected of Corinthians, which has a skilled squad that may be more at winning a cup rather than Brazil’s Brazilian league. This could lead to an early match in the key match in this year’s tournament -the match between Brazil against Argentina. In a rematch of 2012’s final, Corinthians were the only Libertadores victory; they’re within the same league as Boca Juniors.
